SovereignT in Action

One of our basic Ojibwe principles is Reciprocity. Whether it's about helping each other during ceremonies, taking care of each other's children, or giving someone a ride to the store, we have always worked together to thrive and during other times to survive.  Manoominikewin with Kaasii Houchin As an entrepreneur the push is always to grow grow grow and focus on the profit of the business. But Heart Berry is more than a business, we are a cultural art space. We are working to revitalize moccasin making. We are institutionalizing Ojibwe art. We are always working to re align ourselves to the Heart.  Makizinikewin with Elders at Biigidain Housing 15 months ago I attended a scholarship ceremony at Cloquet High...

Elections and Native Land

This week... it's been alot. Many of us are grieving, enraged, numb, and scared.  The day after the election I worked really hard to just stay steady. Like a person in deep grief I moved slowly and with measured intention. As Native people we know the art of survival well. We have survived and thrived despite 400+ years of war and policy meant to destroy us. For me this election represented a possible turn towards something better and instead it feels like we went back to an abuser after narrowly escaping.  Many Native people do not recognize the legitimacy of this government we live under and they're not wrong! However-- our children attend these schools, we go to the clinics funded...

Native Land Benefits Ojibwe Language Institute

We love to do the unexpected at Heart Berry. Our Native Land Scarf collaboration is truly in the spirit of creating collaborations no one saw coming to benefit the good work.  With our friends at the MN Wonderwall we have been able to do a series of collaborations! Two tifos, an award winning design, a record breaking shirt fundraiser, and donated over $15,000 to Wakan Tipi and Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition.  We believe in bringing our art to the world and sharing how it can tell our stories, while centering Native narratives. We believe our art loves us and brings good.  Our most recent collaboration is the Native Land Scarf. Scarves are an integral part of Major League Soccer,...

Sovereignty, Solidarity, Justice, Equity

We have an opportunity every day to use our art, our words, and our actions to share authentic narratives. We are so proud to share our TIFO banner created with the MNWonderwall as part of the MN UFC Allianz Native American Heritage Night.  The MNWonderwall and MN United are embracing Native Heritage Night with their partners at Mille Lacs and this year we got to Zaasaakwe for these amazing folks dancing and singing on the field.  We want to always be pushing the boundaries. Our We are on Native Land TIFO from 2023 spurred conversations, raised funds, and won awards! Where to go from there?  At Heart Berry we are known for our Ojibwe florals, sharing about food, medicines, and...

Sovereignty and Native Excellence

Here at Heart Berry, this small business on the Rez, we are committed to Sovereignty.  Sovereignty of our community, our culture, our economy, our bodies, and our futures.  We love to utilize our cultural art and our space here with you to build that sovereignty.  With the power of your support and collaboration of the MN Wonderwall our give backs to the ICWA Law Center and Wakan Tipi donated over $16,000! Just imagine what is possible! At a recent awards ceremony I was inspired to create a scholarship for Native students seeking education past high school.  We have so much power to create space that supports our young native scholars and build a future more independent, more sovereign, than we...
